EAS was commissioned by English Heritage to assist in preparing a Transport Statement and detailed design for increased visitor expectations and associated car park upgrade at Deal Castle, Dover. In this instance EAS also fulfilled the planning role and liaised with Dover District throughout.
The existing car park was a grass field next to Deal Castle, the upgrades were to improve accessibility into the site and to provide a suitable car park design for both the local community and the visitors to the Castle that could be used in all weather and support the increasing numbers of visitor occurring and further expected due to the improved castle facilities.
Part of the car park was constructed using a geocell with natural shingle to be in keeping with the surroundings and an overflow car park being constructed with a grass reinforcement product. All the car park drains via infiltration to the natural stone (beech type) sub-base layer.
To improve highway safety EAS proposed a modified primary access position and closure of the existing which conflicted with a bus stop. As a result a S278 design and agreement were also required.
EAS worked closely with the English Heritage and the Local Highway Authority to provide all the necessary background information and recommended solutions to ensure that the upgrades to the car park would not impact the local road network. The car park is now completed and open for use.
